Physic’s Project Circular Motion And Gravitation
A satellite experiences a gravitational force of 228 N at an altitude of 4.0E7m above Earth. What is the mass of the satellite • Formula Fg=Gm1m2 • Useful Numbers G=6.67E-11 Mass of earth: 5.97E24 Radius of earth:6.38E6
Fg=G m1m2 228= (6.67E-11)(5.97E24) Which comes to 228= 3.98E14 From the problem we already know that Fg is 228N. We know that G is 6.67E-11. We are trying to find the mass of the satellite(m2). So for mass one(m1) we would use the mass of the earth which is 5.97E24
228= 3.98E14 Which comes to 228= 3.98E14 2.15E15 To find the radius you will have to use two numbers to find it, the altitude(4.0E7) and the radius of earth (6.68E6). You will add those two numbers then square them.
3.98E14 2.15E15 Which is .185 228 = .185 m2 .185 .185 M2 =1232.43 You will now divide 3.9E14 and 2.15E15. after that you will want to get m2 by its self so you will do 228/.185 and that will give you the mass of the satellite.
