PURPOSE • Coastal Highways Protect Coastal Shorelines • Highways Serve as Barrier to Flood Damage • Loss of Emergency Routes from Coastal Areas • Significant Costs Related to the Rebuilding of Failed Highways • A Better Understanding of Erosion Forces • A Need for Better Highway Construction and Materials
PURPOSE Highway 82 was damaged by hurricane when storm surge toped the highway The damage Occurred in the north shoulder of the highway The need arose to understand the physics behind this erosion.
