  3. Today we will… • Understand the events of the Munich Putsch • Assess how Hitler used his trial and imprisonment to his political advantage

  4. Background… • As we know, the Weimar government were in a weak position • They had experienced revolt in Berlin and had little support • Adolf Hitler was someone who wanted to take advantage of this weak position…

  5. Hitler had found himself as the leader of a small party called the German Workers’ Party • Their name changed to the NSDAP (or Nazis) • The group planned a putsch, or takeover, which he would lead • They would take over Bavaria first, followed by the rest of Germany

  6. Who supported the Munich Putsch? • General Ludendorff, WWI military hero • The SA, or ‘brownshirts’, a paramilitary group attached to the Nazi party SA Brownshirt Ludendorff and Hitler

  7. Events of the Putsch - November 1923 • Hitler burst into a Beer hall where Von Kahr, head of Bavaria was speaking and put a gun to his head • He announced he was taking over Bavaria • The next day Hitler and other Nazis marched through Munich and were arrested

  9. Results of the Munich Putsch • Hitler was arrested and tried – he used his trial to inform people of his political ideas • 16 Nazis were killed • 3 policemen were killed • Ludendorff was allowed to go free • People began hearing about ‘Herr Hitler’ through his trial/ prison time

  10. Hitler was jailed for 5 years but served only eight months • It was in jail he wrote his famous Mein Kampf
