Expanding Our Reach • A Deeper Look at Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) • HWTF Annual Conference • October 13, 2010 • Jim D. Martin, Director of Policy & Programs • Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch
AnalysisandTrends of NC Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS) ►Smoking rates among middle and high school students have significantly decreased from 1999-2009. ►Smokeless tobacco use has not significantly changed over this time period. ►New smokeless products (snus, orbs, strips) are viewed by studentsas less risky alternatives to regular smokeless tobacco use. (CDC says they are not a safe substitute). ► The dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke are widely known among students. ► Students reporting positive beliefs about smoking as an enhancer of “coolness” and friendship remains a problem.
Analysis and Trends of NC YTS(Cont.) ►Substantial differences exist in brand preferences by race/ethnicity. ►Students who are more susceptible to tobacco use report similar characteristics. ►Data show that middle and high school youth report broad support for indoor and outdoor smoke-free policies. ►Young adults (18-24 year old) have higher smoking rates than high school students and adults overall.
