Managing Money Maximising your income Working part-time (if you are allowed to) Minimising Expenditure • Keep a spending diary for a week – look for non-essential expenditure • Share course costs • Keep travel costs down • Keep your food cost down • Claim an exemption from NHS charges – fill in a HC1 form • Claim council tax exemption

Working in the UK Your employment rights • Contract • Payslip (showing deductions) • Minimum Pay • Holiday pay • Weekly and daily rest breaks Deductions from pay • Tax & National Insurance • Workplace pension scheme (for some) – can opt out • If you earn more than £12,500 in the tax year, you will pay tax Cash in hand – employers pay you cash so they don’t have to pay tax and NI, it’s illegal

  12. Opening a UK bank account Why? • Using an overseas card to withdraw money may be expensive • Can set up regular payments i.e. for mobile phone • Wages can only be paid into a UK bank account • Tax refunds can only be paid into a UK bank account • Bank stamens required for visa renewal

Opening a UK bank account What documents will you need? • Passport with valid student visa (including your BRP) • National photo ID card if EU • Original document with proof of student status and proof of address in the UK and in your home country……The UWE bank letter • Complete on-line bank letter request form with your UK address details and which bank you wish to open an account with • It will be ready within 2 working days • Collect the UWE Bank Letter from an Information Point to then take to the bank
