  1. Celebration Bastille Day is celebrated on the 14th July every year. The military parade starts the celebration in Paris. Bastille day in France is known as ‘la Fete Nationale’.
  2. Celebration The President of France holds a garden party on Bastille day at the Palais de l’Elysee. The French flag and the Eiffel Tower are important symbols of Bastille day. A man named Jean Michel Jarre attracted 1 million people at a concert at the Eiffel tower on Bastille Day in 1979.
  3. History The French revolution began in 1789. France at the time was an absolute monarchy. In June 1791 constitutional monarchy was established.
  4. History The Bastille prison was a symbol of the kings power. Although there was only 7 prisoners in the prison at the time, the storming was a symbol of liberty and right. Bastille day was declared a national holiday on 6thJuly 1880. In September 1792 the National Convention abolished the monarchy declared France a republic.
  5. About Bastille Prison Bastille was a fortress in Paris. Bastille Saint-Antoine was its formal name. It was used for conflicts within France. It was also used as a state prison. It was stormed by a crowd on 14 July 1789 in the French Revolution.
  6. King Louis XVI childhood Louis Augustewas born on the 23rd August 1754 to his parents Louis, Dauphin of France and Marie Josepha of Saxony. He was the third of seven children in his family. He excelled in lots of subjects such as history, geography and astronomy.
  7. Royal family Louis Auguste married Marie Antoinette on 16th May 1770. He was 15 years old and she was 14 when they married. He became King Louis XVI in 1774, 4 years after they married. They had 4 children named Maire Therese Charlotte, Louis Joseph Xavier Francois, Louis Charles and Sophie Helene Beatrix.
  8. Facts In 1792 the first French republic was formed. Milwaukee, Wisconsin has a large Bastille Day celebration downtown that lasts for 4 days. The famous bicycle race the Tour de France takes place during Bastille Day.
  9. Executions People were executed during the French Revolution. They were executed by getting their heads chopped off using a guillotine. King Louis XVI was the only King of France to be executed. He was beheaded Monday, 21st of January 1793. He was initially buried in an unmarked grave, before being reburied in St Denis Basilica.
