5. Literacy Program • Literacy Stations During this block of time your child rotates through the following stations: • ABC station • Handwriting station • Listening station • Journal station *Technology is embedded in stations

6. Word Wall • We display “sight words” on our classroom word wall. • Please practice the high frequency sight words at home! (These words came home in the first Monday Memo folder.)

7. Phonics Program • Spalding • We integrate this phonics program in daily writing, literacy stations and weekly units.

8. Night Readers • Starting in October • Emergent readers are sent home Mondays to be returned on Thursday.

9. Math • Hands On • Math Journals • Small Group instruction • Marcy Cook activities • Homework reinforcement (starting in Oct) • Mobi Math (school/home based computer program)

10. Technology Opportunities • Computer Center in classroom (mini macs and ipad minis) • Technology-rich lessons • VC’s Computer Lab scheduled for weekly visits • Smartboard exposure in classroom • Istation - adaptive assessment each month • Enrichment Programs - Lexia, Learning.com, Istation intervention lessons

11. Special Classes • Art, Music and P.E. • 10:35 - 11:25 • See your child’s Specials schedule Wear tennis shoes everyday except Art day!!! (Recess is safer with tennis shoes)

12. Lunch Time • Join your child for lunch starting September 23rd! • 11:30 - 12:00 • Arrive a minute or two early to sign-in in the office and receive a visitor’s badge. • You are invited to sit at the special guest table.

13. Snack Time • Your child will bring his/her own snack each day. • Teachers will not have an extra stash of snacks to share if your child forgets.

14. Check the Backpack! • Planner -Will go home Monday -Thursday • Blue Folder- Will go home if there are notes - return next day. • Work Folder - Will go home Friday - return on Monday • Night Readers - Will go home on Monday - return on Thursday • Homework Folder - Will go home on Monday, return on Friday

15. New Planners!! • Planners will go home most school days • Planners will provide daily communication between parents and teachers • It is imperative that the planners, folders, and readers come back on given day. • If you have not purchased your child’s planner, please do so this week (cost). We will start sending them home next week.

19. Progress Monitoring • Mid-quarter progress reports • Quarterly report cards (checklists are attached to show specific progress) • Math Screener - administered 3 times a year • Developmental Reading Assessment- • DRA - administered 3 times a year • Istation data

20. Report Cards • During your scheduled fall conference, you will receive your child’s report card (paper version). • Report cards for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters will be accessed online through the HAC.

21. Report Cards Rubric Format • A rubric is: a scoring guide that seeks to evaluate a student’s performance based on a set of guidelines. • A rubric is NOT: a single numerical grade compared to a letter grade an average of several grades.

22. Report Card Scoring • 4 - consistently demonstrates exemplary understanding & application of skills, working independently after initial instruction • 3 - demonstrates proficient understanding & applies skills independently by the end of the grading period

23. Report Card Scoring • 2 - demonstrates initial stages of understanding, applies skills with teacher guidance & reinforcement • 1 - demonstrates a lack of understanding & re-teaching is required

24. Reading/Writing Rubric • Each quarter will “raise the bar” and apply rigor to Rdg./Wtg. expectations • DRA- Developmental Reading Assessment- -MISD’s expectation Level 4 is easy to achieve with classroom instruction and home support (sight words)

25. Teacher Conferences • We will have a scheduled conference in the Fall. (Monday, Oct. 28th) • We are happy to conference upon request anytime through out the year. • Our conference period is Mon, Tue, Thurs, & Fri. @ 10:35-11:25.

26. Volunteering Opportunities • Thank YOU for your help!!! • Be sure to complete a background check online. • Parents will receive a “volunteer” badge to work in the classroom. Return to the office on your way out. • We are still in need of Lunch Room helpers.

27. Look forward to… • Scholastic book club orders • Class Parties: Winter party, Valentines Day and End of the Year • Cougar Publishing (February): only one opportunity to order a class book for your child • Field Trip (April): Dallas World Aquarium

28. Special Reminders • We are happy to help you pass out Birthday invitations to classmates. All students must be invited or at least all girls or all boys. • Please label and baggie money you send with your child! (lunch, milk, cougar cave, special store opportunities) • Traveling: send an email and call the VC office if your child’s going home plan changes. Make sure your child (and teacher) knows your rainy day plans.
