Introduction The city has maintained the original layout of the historical part ,with its two principal street running parallel, on opposite banks of the river Lemene. The town was originally girded by a wall with 5 gateways ,of which three still exist (S. Gottardo, S. Agnese and S. Giovanni)
History of Portogruaro The foundation of Portogruaro can be traced to 1140 when Gervino, the bishop of Concordia, ceded the land along the banks of the river Lemene to some local people toward the construction of a port, some warehouses and dwellings. IN 1420 P. was annexed to the Republic of Venice which in this period became part of the land of Partria of Friuli. In 1797 Napoleon ceded the territory to the state of Austria. The Austrian domination lasted until 1866 when P. became part of the Kingdom of Italy
Monuments • The cathedral • The well by G. Pilacorte • The municipal building • The municipal villa • The Gate of San Giovanni • The watermills
The cathedral Built during the early decades of the 19th century upon the side of an earlier Romanesque church, the remaining traces being the inclined church tower. The inside is divided in to 3 naves with a deep presbytery above the central door “the last supper” attributed to Pietro Muttoni. At the second altar on the right “Saint Rocco” attributed to Antonio Carneo.
The well of G.Pilacorte Situated next to the municipal build, It’s one of the symbol of Portogruaro. The well of the cranes , more than 500 years old, was created in 1494 by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte. On the well we find not only the coat-of-arms of the town but also two potestr’ of the 14th century ,probably Paolo Contarini and Jacopo Gabriel. In the 17th century the well passed I private hands. It was gifted to the council in 1908 upon the occasion of the opening of the public aqueduct.
The municipal building Gothic in style, with its exposed brick work, the edifice was built in two distinct phases. The oldest part is the central part probably built in 1265. During the insurrection of Bardi in 1371 the municipal build was burnt out. When the patriarch of Aquileia intervened to re-establish his authority the community erected a new lodge with the ghibelline crenulations.
The municipal villa It’s attributed to Guglielmo de Gris from Alzano, know as the Bergamasco and as such can be dated to the middle of the 16th century. The Bergamasco was commissioned to build the villa by Antonio Frattina. As with many other palaces of port, the villa’s walls were enlivened by frescoes of satyrs, horses and other creature, although these had all disappeared by 1893.
The gate of San Giovanni The Saint Giovanni gate was built towards the end of the 12th Century, and named first-the ceremonial gate-and then later Saint Lazarus after the nearby hospice for Lepers. Restructured in 1555-56 from being part of the town’s defensive system to the principal entryway to the town for people and merchandise from the nearby merchant warehouses.
The watermills The mills situated in the middle of the river Lemene, were built by the bishops of Concordia during the 12th century, and belonged to the diocese until 1867. The maintenance was carried out under the auspices of Bishop Antonio Feletto in 1477 and again in 1755 by Bishop Jacopo Maria Erizzo. With the passing of the Veneto region into the hands of the kingdom of Italy in 1866, and the subsequent laws which included the transfer of title of much ecclesiastical property, the mills came under the ownership of the State on the 25th of September 1867. In 1970 they were bought by the Council of Portogruaro.
