Usage of Fingerprinting • Fingerprinting is the most commonly used biometric identification scheme • Reasons: Cheapest, fastest and most reliable. • Fingerprinting has about 60% of the biometric world market • Fingerprinting is used in criminal investigations, laptops and has been recently integrated into airports such as Heathrow.
How does Fingerprinting Work? • Fingerprinting basically works by identifying finger patterns that are unique to an individual. • These unique characteristics are usually composed of ridges and patterns imbedded in each person’s finger. • These unique characteristics are formerly called minutiae and are found on fingertips
How does Fingerprinting work? (cont’d) • The exact method differs in each type of technology • The most common methods are optical scanning and capacitance scanning. • When a fingerprint is passed over the scanner a gray scale image is captured • Computer software identifies key minutiae points • They are converted into a unique digital representation known as a template • The template is compared and matched to all other fingerprints in the database
