CEN4500 Experiment 2: Bluetooth Device Discovery and Analysis Dr. Ahmed Helmy Introduced by Sungwook Moon Jeeyoung Kim Wei-jen Hsu
Outline • Introduction of the lab 2 • Bluetooth device discovery • Brain-storming questions
Logistics • Lab2: • Part I: encounter discovery (2/25 – 3/7) • Part II: submit a report by noon on 3/27 to the lab • This presentation slides and the lab manual will be available on the course website. • We will distribute PDAs you use for the lab today. The encounter discovery starts right away.
Delay Tolerant Networks (DTN) • Performance-challenged networks where continuous end-to-end connectivity cannot be assumed.
Objectives of this lab • To understand (through hands-on experience) what are the patterns of the existing communication opportunities via short-range radio (Bluetooth). • To brain-storm about how we could utilize this encounter information in DTNs.
Encounter • If a device is within a radio-range, we call it an encounter. • In our experiment, Bluetooth discovery means an encounter.
Part I: Bluetooth Discovery • Each person will be given an iPAQ PDA with a program called BlueChat. BlueChat logs other Bluetooth devices in radio range. • Carry this iPAQ PDA with BlueChat program running all the time. • It is OK to play with this PDA but please be careful not to remove any of files. • Return the device on Mar 7 to the lab (CSE 401).
Part I: Bluetooth Discovery • BlueChat characteristics: • displays the ID and MAC address of discovered Bluetooth devices. • scans every 20 seconds, however, it may not display some of devices that pass by quickly. • refreshes every 3 min., clears the devices displayed and may not display any devices for 20-30 sec. • If a battery runs out, a timer might be set to 2005 (Windows mobile 5.0 drawback), so be careful not to drain the battery.
Part I: Bluetooth Discovery • Check to make sure Bluetooth is enabled. You can turn this on/off in the setting -> connection. • If a battery runs out, a timer might be set to 2005 (Windows mobile 5.0 bug), so be careful not to drain the battery.
Part II: Brain-storming • Collected trace will be uploaded to the course website. Download and analyze it according to the questions given on the lab manual. • Each group should submit a report by noon on Mar 27 to the lab. • Details about the report will be up on the website in the following week.
Q&A • You are always welcomed to come to the lab for questions.
