The English language teacher: a computer geek, a technophobe or just.. a low-cost smart web scavenger? BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN TECHNOLOGY AND PEDAGOGY Attilio Galimberti – ELI - Milan, 26 November 2007
Get ready for Takeoff WAIT…!!!
Teaching context (1) • Do I teach in a language centre where students pay for a language course? • Do I teach in a State school where English is only ONE among the other subjects?
Teaching context (2) • Does my school or institution… • provide language teachers with useful on-the-job training? • support didactic research in foreign languages? • invest in new hardware, educational software or technological devices?
As a language teacher... • am I a ‘doer’ or a ‘thinker’? More a ‘thinker’ than a ‘doer’? Or both at the same time? • am I generally satisfied with my students’ average output? • what language skills do I want my students to develop? • how much importance do I give to learning technologies to improve the teaching/learning process?
As a language teacher... How do I feel when I come across words like… E-LEARNING WIKIS BLOGS PODCASTING WEBLEARNING WEB 2.0 SOCIAL NETWORKING…???
As a language teacher... • What should I do if I… feel that I could motivate my students better if I started introducing any learning technologies, but for any reason… my school doesn’tprovide courses or I can’t afford expensive ones?

How are you feeling now? DIZZY? SCARED? EXCITED? DISAPPOINTED? DEPRESSED? CURIOUS…??? FED UP WITH TECHNOLOGY?
Relax… and think it over: How can we (teachers and educators) bridge the gap between Technology and Pedagogy?
What is education? Education is… NOT about teaching facts to people NOT about telling them what they need to know NOT about giving them answers but about… giving them questions and about… helping them find the tools they need to help themselves to answer these questions. (Ulf Dantanus - IATEFL)
