  2. WMU History • Western Michigan University was founded in in 1903 as, Western State Normal School. • Western State Normal School was first established to prepare elementary school teachers • Western State Normal School was given the name Western Michigan University in 1957.

  3. WMU History • 117 students were enrolled in WMU at the time of its establishment • The first president of WMU was Dwight B. Waldo. • Currently, WMU is the fourth largest university and enrolls approximately 26,575 students.
