  1. Lesson 7: Controlling Technology Systems Lesson 7 Big Idea Controls are mechanisms or activities that use information to cause systems to change. Purpose of Lesson: Toidentify characteristics of and model control systems. Vs. Analytical Judgmental

  2. 2/2 Drill - copy Analytical Systems – systems that mathematically or scientifically make comparisons. Judgmental Systems – systems that use human opinions and values Vs. Analytical Judgmental

  3. Lesson 2: Controlling Technology Systems Exploration – Define and apply understanding of Analytical and Judgmental systems to several examples. • Analytical Systems – systems that mathematically or scientifically make comparisons. • Judgmental Systems – systems that use human opinions and values • Judgment may be base on intuition - human ability to sense or know immediately without reasoning

  4. How do you know when to stop pouring? Judgmental You want enough to drink but you don’t want to over pour and make a mess. This would be analytical: I want to drink exactly 40 mL of milk

  5. Are there too many people on this boat? Are they over the legal limit? Analytical Just count the people and compare to the legal limit.

  6. Is this suitcase too heavy to take on the plane? Analytical Just weigh it and compare to the airline limit.

  7. How long should I wait before I eat again? Judgmental You often eat when you feel you are hungry.

  8. Is it a “keeper”? Analytical Fish must meet size or weight requirements. Just measure and compare.

  9. Just like riding a bike • Steering a bicycle uses our judgment. We turn left and right based on “intuition” and experience. Input Process Output Feedback

  10. We want to make a right turn without falling over. Input Process Lean and turn to the right Output The bike turns right Feedback Did we turn enough? Is the turn completed? Adjusting “device” Turn and lean more/less?

  11. 2/3 Cruise control • Most cars now have this feature as standard equipment. It allows the driver to set the desired speed and not have to worry about going too fast or too slow. • Copy the chart and list the car part

  12. 1/12 Copy and keep out • Communication systems are made up of : • Source • Encoder • Transmitter • Receiver • Decoder • Destination

  13. Lesson 2: Controlling Technology Systems Explanation - The teacher will conduct an interactive lesson in which each of the following are discussed: • Components of control systems • Monitoring devices and sensors • Data-comparing devices • Adjusting devices • Manual versus automatic controls • Mechanical Technology Systems • Electrical Technology Systems • Electronic Technology Systems

  14. 2/3 Control Systems • Control Systems are composed of 3 parts: • Monitoring Devices • Data-comparing Devices • Adjusting Devices

  15. 2/7 Copy • Communication systems are made up of : • Source • Encoder • Transmitter • Receiver • Decoder • Destination

  16. 9/15 Copy and give an example • Communication systems can operate • Human to Machine • example • Machine to Human • example

  17. To the Wall and Back • Position robot facing a wall about 5’ away • Robot waits for your sound command • Drive toward the wall until 18” away and stop. • Robot shouts “Hurray!” • Turn around and drive away from the wall until another sound command stops it.

  18. 9/15 Copy and give an example • Communication systems can operate • __________ to Human • Example ___________________ • _________ to Machine • Example ___________________

  19. Controlling Technology Systems Extension Activity – “It’s Under Control” Context Many jobs are too dangerous, dull, or dirty for humans to do. Technology systems have been developed to free humans from this kind of work yet still get the jobs done. Exploration on land, sea, and space is often done through the use of robots. With the use of sensors, a processor, and a program, robots can autonomously carry out a task. Challenge: Adjust and program a Lego Mindstorm “Gobot Rover” to explore a cave and deploy a (simulated) remote air quality sensing device in the cavern with the highest ceiling.

  20. Cave Specifications

  21. Box Escape • Robot will be placed on the floor inside a 2’x2’ box with one side removed. • Program must begin with a “I’m ready” sound from the robot. • Movement will begin with a clapping sound. • Robot must spin (slowly) until it detects the missing wall. • It will then stop spinning and drive forward out of the box until it hears another “clap”

  22. 9/9 Drill - copy __________ Systems – systems that mathematically or scientifically make ______________. _______ ___Systems – systems that use ________ opinions and _______ Vs. Analytical Judgmental

  23. 9/13 • Communication ______ are made up of : • Source • ____________ • Transmitter • ____________ • ____________ • ____________

  24. 2/8 Drill – copy and complete Encoding -to put an idea or message into code or language Decoding - _____________ Convert (a coded message) into intelligible language

  25. 2/10 Drill – Copy and label each as Open or Closed-loop NXT drives toward wall and stops 12” away (ultrasonic) NXT spins until it hears a clap NXT drives until it finds a black line.

  26. 2/10 Drill – Copy and give examples A microprocessor is a computer processor on a microchip. It is programmable. Has inputs and outputs Examples of each?

  27. 2/13 Bike Riding • Copy the chart and list the body part of the control system used to: • Turn Right on a Bike

  28. Just like riding a bike • Steering a bicycle uses our judgment. We turn left and right based on “intuition” and experience. Input Process Output Feedback

  29. We want to make a right turn without falling over. Input Process Lean and turn to the right Output The bike turns right Feedback Did we turn enough? Is the turn completed? Adjusting “device” Turn and lean more/less?

  30. Notebook Check today • Drills • Lesson 1 notes 9/1 • Lesson 7 notes 9/20 • Mechanical Machine Worksheet 9/8 • Safety Rules 9/2 • Understanding Control Systems article 9/9 • Natural vs Man-made Systems Worksheet 9/1

  31. 9/20 Drill – Copy and give examples A ______________ is a computer processor on a _________. It is ______________. Has _____ and ______ Example 1 __________ Example 2 __________

  32. 1/17 Drill –Label as Open or Closed-loop NXT drives toward a wall and stops 12” away. (using ultrasonic sensor) Open Closed NXT spins until it hears a clap. Open Closed NXT drives until it finds a black line. Open Closed

  33. ____ Drill – copy and complete _________ -to put an idea or __________ into _______ or language _________ - _____________ Convert (a coded message) into intelligible language

  34. 9/12 Control Systems • ________ ______are composed of 3 parts: • ____________ Devices • _______-comparing Devices • _____________ Devices

  35. 9/14 Copy and give an example • _______________ systems can operate • ________ to Machine • Example __________________ • ________ to Human • Example __________________
