What is communication? • It’s sending messages. • It’s getting your point across. • It’s sharing ideas and feelings.
Communication The process of sending and receiving messages in order to share meanings.
Communication is complex because: • Communication is really more than just speaking and listening. • Communication is transactional. • Communication involves sharing of meanings. • Communication depends on feedback. • Communication is blocked by interference. • Communication occurs in a context.
Encoding a Message Speakers encode messages by selecting the most appropriate verbal and nonverbal symbols for specific listeners.
Decoding a Message Listeners decode a message by filtering out the exact meaning of the original message.
Feedback The verbal and nonverbal messages listeners send that tell a speaker how they are doing.
Context The setting or situation in which you are communicating.

Types of Communication • Interpersonal • Ongoing interaction between two people. • Group or Team • Interaction among people who share an interest in the same thing or share a common purpose. • Public Speaking • One speaker or a small group of presenters talking before an audience.
