  1. Next-Generation Broadband Wireless Technologies and Standards Bhaskar Ramamurthi Professor, TeneT Group, Dept. of Electrical Engg., IIT Madras And Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology, India Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  2. Broadband Applications Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  3. Coverage and Capacity • 1 km coverage radius needed in dense urban • With 30-40m towers (typical cellular tower) • Urban channels typically involve 6-7 walls penetration • Implies system gain requirement of ~ 160 dB • 2 – 3 km radius coverage needed in suburban areas • Same system gain enough due to lower shadow loss • 15 – 25 km radius coverage in rural areas • 160 dB system gain would be adequate • Rooftop (6m) antennas is used on the subscriber side • ~ 900 subscribers per cell in all cases Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  4. Usage and Capacity Requirements Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  5. Cell Tower Fiber Network Sharing of Infrastructure Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  6. Gsm/cdma phones GSM/CDMA Network 0.9/1.8 GHz ~100kbps Carrier BTS BTS Fiber Network BTS BTS BSC MSC/ HLR/ BSS/OSS BTS BTS Sharing of Infrastructure Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  9. Imminent Technology : WCDMA / HSDPA • WCDMA : Wideband Code Division Multiple Access • HSDPA : High-Speed Downlink Packet Access • Evolution of UMTS (3G) • Downlink optimized for broadbandservices • Uplink remains WCDMA in first version • 5 + 5 MHz channels as in UMTS • 1/1 spectrum re-use in every sector • Peak data-rate per sector : DL – 14.4 Mbps UL – 2.0 Mbps • Users on cell boundaries at a disadvantage Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  10. Imminent Technology : 1xEVDO / 1xEVDV • Evolution of Qualcomm’s 3G-1x CDMA system • Downlink optimized for broadbandservices • Uplink remains as in 3G1x • 1xEVDO : Evolution of single carrier (1x) Data Only • 1xEVDV : Evolution of single carrier (1x) Data and Voice • 1.25 + 1.25 MHz channels as in 3G1x • 1/1 spectrum re-use in every sector • Peak data-rate per sector : DL – 3.1 Mbps UL – 1.8 Mbps • Users on cell boundaries at a disadvantage Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  11. Imminent Technology : Broadband corDECT • Evolution of India’s corDECT WLL system • DECT Air Interface evolved to x3 bit rate • Backward-compatible physical layer extension • 1/1 spectrum re-use per sector • Innovative use of polarization • 1.728 MHz channel, TDD • Peak Data Rate per sector : DL – 1.44 Mbps UL – 1.44 Mbps • Fixed terminals, no mobility • Rooftop/window antenna • All subscribers get similar service • Cost effective Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  12. Imminent Technology : Flash OFDM • Proprietary technology of Flarion Inc USA • May evolve into a standard in next one / two years • First mobile OFDMA technology to be commercially deployed • 1.25 + 1.25 MHz • Evolution to 5 + 5 MHz • Spectrum re-use 1/1 in every sector • Peak Date rate : DL – 3 Mbps UL – 1.5 Mbps • VoIP based voice service with low latency • QoS for data services Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  13. Emerging Technology : WiMAX • WiMAX : subset (profile) of IEEE 802.16d/e standard • .16d 256OFDM : suitable for LOS deployment • .16d/e OFDMA : suitable for indoor penetration • .16e : also supports mobility • Channel Bandwidth : typically 5 or 10 MHz, TDD • Spectrum re-use : 1/3 or 1/1 per sector • Peak Data Rate : DL + UL - ~4.5 Mbps per MHz • Mobility only upto 60 kmph or so initially Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  14. Technology Summary ST-DL : Sector Throughput (down link) Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  15. Cable corDECT : an Innovation • Innovative broadband solution to compete with wireline • Combines Broadband corDECT with downstream cable • If TV works, 40 MbpsDL works • UL on cable does not work in Indian cable network • The only near-term solution for greenfield operator Works on Indian Cable network Bhaskar Ramamurthi

  16. Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT) • A public-private initiative with funding from govt. and industry • currently located at IITM • Mission is to make India a global player in wireless space • Participate in international standardisation activities • Visit cewit.org.in for publications, presentations • A study of Broadband Wireless Technologies • Broadband Wireless System Requirements for India • HSDPA, EVDO, WiMAX, … Bhaskar Ramamurthi
