  2. Objective • Identify why masks are important to African culture • Identify the qualities of the African art style—geometric, pattern, texture. • Practice manipulating simple materials to replicate patterns, textures, and colors in African masks.

  3. Why is it important? • It is important to acknowledge and appreciate non-western art as well as the culture that it came from. • It is important to be able to experiment with new and unconventional materials with creative freedom

  4. More About African Culture • NYAMA • The ENERGY that activates everything in the universe • Can be good or bad • Nyama flows from the creator to the object

  5. What are the masks used for? A link between the living world and that of their ancestors A kind of reincarnation of powerful meaningful spirits usually called upon in times of celebration or dire need.

  6. Don’t Mess With the Mask It is believed that the person who wears the mask will actually be embodied by the spirit that activates it. There are some secret societies that have masks that can only be seen by their members…or else!

  12. WHAT IS TEXTURE? • Texture is simply a way of visually representing how something feels to the touch (or might feel in the imagination), even if the viewer may never touch the artwork.

  13. Pattern • Organized repetition of shapes, forms, colors.

  14. The question is… How can we do this with cardboard, newspapers and magazines?
