The Man • De Gasperi wasborn in Pieve Tesino near Bolzano on 3 April, 1881. • In 1919 he founded the Italian People’s Party. • In May 1924 he became secretary of the anti-Fascist group. • In 1944 he became the first general secretary of the Christian Democracy party, founded by himself. • In 1945 hebecame the first prime ministerof the just-foundedItalian Republic.
The Man • After World War II hewas part of the CostituentAssembly. • Hewasalongwith Konrad Adenauer, Winston Churchill, Joseph Bech, Johan Willem Beyen, Walter Hallstein, SiccoMansholt, Altiero Spinelli, Robert Schuman, Jean Monnet, Paul-Henri Spaak, oneof the founding-fathersofEuropeanUnion. • On 19 August 1954, he died in SelladiValsugana.
The Euro • De Gasperi, Schuman and Adenauer first launched the movement to build a Europe that was peaceful, prosperous and democratic. • The ultimate objective was peace - peace within Europe. Europe had to destroy the seeds of conflict and disintegration that existed within her. • He always believed that it was the Union’s destiny to grow: ‘this circle where six countries are already grouped together must remain open so that […] other countries may join or come closer’.
European • The message of Alcide De Gasperi retains all of its sense and all of its strength: ‘to unite Europe, we may have to destroy more than we create: to discard a world of prejudice, a world of fear, a world of resentment. […] We must talk, write, insist, and not let up for a single instant: let Europe remain the issue of!’
