Links to LOC Resources: Abolition & Slavery Accounts Slaves and the Courts Timelines of African American History 1852-1880 Voices from the Days of Slavery Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom Objective: Students will summarize the roles of leaders of the abolitionist movement and the Underground Railroad, including Harriet Tubman. Book Summary: A story of the spiritual journey of Harriet Tubman to free three hundred slaves using the Underground Railroad. Setting: Mid-1800’s in the South during slavery. Author: Carole Boston Weatherford Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom Hyperion Books for Children (2006) Caitlin Peay. Winthrop University. Spring 2011.

  2. What is going on? • Write a narrative of the picture. What do you see? What do you think the people were thinking? Can you describe what is happening?

  3. What’s your plan? • Harriet Tubman had to come up with a plan for her escape. Write a simulated journal of your plan to escape slavery. Also plan your return to save your family.

  4. What song would you sing? • Many slaves in the Underground Railroad wrote songs that were directions to warn others and protect them. Write a song and provide the translation.

Standards • NCSS: History • South Carolina Standard 4-6 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the Civil War and its impact on America. • Indicator 4-6.2 Summarize the roles and accomplishments of the leaders of the abolitionist movementand the Underground Railroad before and during the Civil War, including those of Harriet Tubman.
