What is Information Literacy? Keri Muniozguren and David Silva EDT 608 National University
What is Information Literacy? • According to the American Library Assoc. “To be information literate, a person must … • be able to recognize when information is needed • have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.” • In other words: At its core, information literacy is how to use the internet. Because the internet is information. And information literacy (IL) is the ability to find that information, receive it, and utilize it.
Why is it important for students to develop skills in this area? • Society has shifted from an industrial age, to an "information age," more frequently termed a "knowledge society," our economy is based on the exchange of information. • students can no longer be expected to learn a finite body of knowledge. • Information literacy enables students to recognize the value of information and use it to make informed choices in their personal, professional and academic lives.
What are the most important information literacy skills you think students should develop? • An information literate student is able to recognize the information needed and then • determine the nature and the extent of the information needed. • evaluate information and its sources critically and incorporate selected information into their knowledge base and value system. • use effectively and efficiently for a common purpose. • understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and assesses and used information ethically and legally.
How do you think these can be developed? • By using the technology; by putting computers in the classrooms or using computer labs. • The principal task for educators is to teach young minds how to deal with ideas (not just data or worse, opinions). • By giving students the opportunity to find the answers and information instead of having it given to them develops information literacy.
