MED’S ● MEDLIFE creates partnerships with local communities and works alongside community members to create a sense of working together. ● MEDLIFE combines three components to tackle the disparities in wealth and healthcare access. ○ Medicine (medical clinics, patient follow-up care) ○ Education (mobile schools, health/legal/development workshops in communities) ○ Development (development corps, ongoing infrastructure projects)
LISTENING TO THE POOR ● MEDLIFE listens to the poor and hires local members of the community to represent MEDLIFE. ○ These individuals spend time in MEDLIFE’s communities and listen to the needs of the people we serve. ■ Many of them live in these communities themselves, and therefore understand and empathize with the needs of the patients. ○ This generates jobs for locals and a sense of self-sufficiency. MEDLIFE utilizes local professionals (medical/ architecture/ community planning). This allows us to continue projects throughout the year.
Working hand in hand ● Student Volunteers are the driving force behind MEDLIFE through both their local activities and participation in mobile clinics, mobile schools, and project corps. ● MEDLIFE volunteers have the opportunity to witness the lack of access to healthcare, infrastructure and education first-hand by visiting our communities in Peru, Ecuador, Tanzania and India.
Life Experience ● Volunteers have the opportunity to work closely with local professionals on the ground and gain hands-on experience. ● All local professionals working with MEDLIFE actually instruct volunteers and give them hands-on instruction. ● Volunteers work alongside community members in the same projects, creating a sense of partnership and allowing students to forge relationships with locals. ● Volunteers come from all different educational and academic backgrounds, giving participants the opportunity to meet like-minded people from all over the world.
FULLY EQUIPPED CLINICS ● MEDLIFE brings Mobile Clinics to the shantytowns and rural communities where there is the greatest need for medical care and improved infrastructure. ● Clinics are staffed by local doctors, dentists, nurse and medical professionals. ● Clinics are fully equipped with the necessary medical equipment to ensure proper dental, medical, gynecological care.
Project Focused ● Often, NGOs finish construction projects without coordinating with the appropriate municipalities or local entities first. ○ Projects then do not last because they are left unattended. ● MEDLIFE works with local architects, community organizers and local leaders to determine the needs of the community members and what would be serve them. Before After
Involvement at Home ● Students play a major role in funding year-round operations in community development and patient follow-up by: ○ Holding campus fundraisers ○ Attending volunteer trips ○ Fundraising campaigns ● Without these contributions, MEDLIFE would be unable to bring medical professionals to attend to patients throughout the year, or maintain full-time staff to run operations.
Involvement at Rowan • Fundraise for the MEDLIFE cause • Bring to light global health issues • Promote a healthier lifestyle on campus • Local community service projects • Partnership with other clubs on campus • Recruit and help interested students for volunteer trips
What do students gain for joining MEDLIFE?
Student Experience ● Student can use this experience on College applications and work resumes. MEDLIFE clinics create a well-balanced and worldly appearance in the eyes of admissions boards and job recruiters that are often not present in the competition. • ● Perks of traveling to a foreign place • ● Great way to get involved on campus. ● Students gain experience and leadership skills. ● Volunteers who participate on a trip have the opportunity to help those in need in an effective and tangible manner. ○ Gain experience in international health, development and education.
