Learning to listen to the voice of the Lord1 Samuel 3 Pastor Shane L. Johnson, D.Min. 5/2/10 New Life Church
Questions! • How many messages do you suppose come through your cell phone in the course of a day? • What do you do with them? • How do you go about sorting out which ones are important and which ones are not?
How do you go about recognizing God’s voice? • People sometimes say that if God were talking they would surely recognize it • In Samuel’s case, it was clear that God was speaking, yet he did not know it • You and I go through the course of a week, often too quickly, with the Lord attempting to communicate
Safe assumptions about communicating with the Lord • He always want to communicate with His people • He will communicate in a way specific to you if you will look for it
Ways God communicates to His people • Through scripture- this is the primary way, the most needful, and the most neglected • Through prayer, fasting and waiting on the Lord • Through the conviction of the Holy Spirit • Through circumstances • Through people- Nathan to David • Through a word of prophecy, wisdom or knowledge • Through pain- pain is God’s megaphone to a deaf world- C S Lewisthis is particularly useful for strong-willed people • Through an unrelenting message that will not cease until we have responded to it- the call to accept Christ, issues of forgiveness, health issues…
And so… • What do you need to do to better listen to the Lord?
