BLANK (Intro) Research Overview June 2000 ( 34 Slides) Start of NATO TG.PPT
Joint Air Laboratory Command Steve McQueen
Aim • To develop the technology to support the command operating team in setting their working environment, • To assist command team in solving the problem with which they are faced, • To organise the operational information the command team receives, • To help them to respond proactively and rapidly to an ever-changing operational picture.

Research Tasks • Visualisation • Campaign Combat Information Management for Future Command. • Technology Infrastructure • To provide software architecture to allow distribution of heterogeneous data.
Visualisation • Investigate decision making process • Develop an HCI to be used on distributed architecture. • provide instant access to remote data sources, • modular and flexible display, • allow campaign trends to be monitored, • customise presentation overlays.
Jini - a technology • User abstraction • data source, • location on network. • Allows services to register dynamically. • Minimises system administrator overheads.
Research Objectives • Investigate distributed architecture within JFAC & Strategy Cell. • Determine merits of a distributed CAOC. • Shape focus of joint operations. • Integrate (legacy) systems.
Benefits • HCI • Combat Assessments available at touch of a button. • Provide timely feedback. • Reduce decision making cycle. • Allow more time to formulate responses/ solutions. • Architecture • Distributed JFACC/CAOC • Smaller footprint in theatre, • Increase survivability.
