  2. Moore Square’s Physical Location • Located in downtown Raleigh, the state capital of North Carolina. • Part of the Wake County Public School System. • Largest school district in NC [16th largest school district in the US.] • School Board instability. • Diversity controversy.

  3. Moore Square’s Immediate Community A young neighborhood: two largest age groups by percentage are 15-19 year-olds and 20-24 year olds. Over 70% of residents are African-American. 25% of residents live in a home with a single female householder.

  4. Moore Square’s Broader Community Moore Square contains several feeder Elementary Schools that are located far outside its neighborhood. Additionally, Moore Square pulls students from all over Wake County due to its magnet program. Which bus routes serve Moore Square? Two base bus routes for the neighborhood, but twenty-five bus routes for the county.

  8. Moore Square as a Global School Part of NC’s branch of the Global Schools Network “An international education partnership of schools and organizations committed to ensuring that students excel in an interconnected world.”

  9. Moore Square as a Paideia School • “The Paideiaapproach to education is based on the principle that all children can learn and that schools should prepare students to become lifelong learners. School is student centered, which means that ultimately it nurtures the self-reliance of the individual student by developing his or her own sense of responsibility.” • Three main components of Paideia Teaching: • Didactic Instruction, Intellectual Coaching, and Seminars

  10. Faculty and Staff Staff aligned or better than district average in terms of “quality teachers” and number of advanced degrees. Most teachers have been at MS for between 4 and 10 years. School librarian is listed as “School Librarian/Tech Contact/Blackboard Coordinator”. There is an Instructional Resource Teacher, but no Technology Teacher. A Technology Assistant is listed.

  14. Parent Support Moore Square PTSA has an extensive, active, updated website. Parent volunteers are listed for activities including Media Center and Book Fair. School Improvement Team.

  15. Other Libraries Fayetteville Street Public Library [part of Wake County’s system of 20 libraries] is two blocks away. Moore Square is approximately 10 minutes from NC State and their slate of libraries, including the new, innovative Hunt Library.
