  6. America is in the Heart Now Threat of deportation, vastly expanded border enforcement. Widespread opposition to some forms of discrimination. Discrimination based on citizenship, not on race. Families, family-based migration. Weaker labor movement. Expansion of Asian, Latino middle classes.

  7. Reading Journal 2 Select a short scene from Part I or Part II that stands out for you. The scene should involve the actions of characters in the novel. The scene should not be one of the philosophical interludes. The scene should be short because you will type it into your journal entry. Use an MLA block-quotation format. The page number should appear in parentheses after the quotation.

  8. Reading Journal 2 In a separate paragraph explain why the scene is significant. Why highlight this scene? How does the scene point to broad issues or problems? How do you relate to the scene?

  9. Homework • Do the reading journal over the weekend. • Finish America is in the Heart before Thursday. We will discuss Part Two and Part Three on Tuesday, and I will give you the description for the summary assignment.
