Books and Stuff • Serway and Jewitt “Physics for Engineers and Scientists”, Volume 2, 7th Edition Thompson – Brooks/Cole • You need to get a WebAssign LogIn (Bundled with NEW textbook) • You need to purchase an “i-clicker” and register it on the web. • You must answer a clicker question in class to complete the registration. • Anyone seen with two clickers in class will be shot!
Keep This in Mind This is a HARD course!
The Dirty Little 2049 Secret: • The percent of initial registrants who receive a grade of D,F or W from most instructors: ~47
Based upon interviews with some of the 47% of the 2049 population: • Students waited too long to get down to serious studying and by then it was too late. • Students blew off lectures because they were boring. • Students stopped working on the course from time to time because of the pressures of other courses. • All agree that this one of their more difficult courses (when taken at the appropriate time) • Many state that their calculus skills were not up to the challenge of the course.
Examinations • There will be THREE examinations • Schedule to be announced. • “Cheat sheets” will be allowed – small index cards – No formula sheets will be distributed. • There will be a COMPREHENSIVE final examination during final exam week. • There will be a short quiz each Friday at the start of class except when there is an exam, etc. • Be on time on quiz and exam days. You will not be given extra time if you are late for any reason.
Student IDs • For i-clicker registration and for WebAssign your ID will be your PID(NOT NID) • without the leading letteror leading zeros. • X1234567 1234567 • X0123456 -> 123456 • If this doesn't work, try adding the leading ‘0’.
#(*&#@$ i-Clickers • Will be used throughout the course. • Will be used daily. • Usually for class questions: Correct Answer=3, Incorrect answer=2, No answer=0. (Will Vary) • For clicker quiz (if there are any), only correct answers will count. • Because you get credit even for wrong answers, clicker scores should be pretty reasonable. i-clicker
The Clicker - Registration • Buy the clicker. Book Package is the cheapest approach. • Book • i-Clicker $10.00 discount (?) – Sell later for more $ • “Extended” WebAssign Registration Card • If you buy a used book, you need to purchase the other items separately. • There is a clicker code number on the back of the device you will enter when you register your clicker. Instructions are on the website.
The Clicker What?? CODE
Why Clickers • Gets you to class. • Keeps you awake and focused on what is going on. • Gives me an idea of which concepts are getting through and which are not. • Should help your grade. • If you answer all questions wrong, your average will be a 66%. • Since you should get some questions correct, this should help your grade. It usually does! • Gives you something else to hate about the course.
Homework It is important to notice that homework counts for a significant % of your grade. Homeworks will be based on WebAssign. Although “extensions” will be available, valid reasons should be offered at the time or he request. There will usually be 8-10 problems assigned each week. These problems often pop up on exams & quizzes. Classes may begin with a clicker question or two about the reading assignment or the previous session. Reading assignments will be announced on WebAssign but will always be the beginning of the material that is next to be covered.
WebAssign Startup Be sure to change your password as soon as possible to avoid someone else doing your homework! Digits of your PID ihatephysics
My gripes …. • Students study at the last minute. • Students have big holes in their math skills: • Interpreting Graphs. • Using Calculus. • Students come to my office expecting me to solve their homework problems. • I will always help … I will not always give you the answers! • Work on the problems before you come for help…
Things to do with the textbook that you just spent a lot of money on:
Improve your balance Physics
Feedback Based Approach • More demos when possible. • More problems in class • Minimize PowerPoint. ????? • Last semester’s PP notes are on my website. Watch out for some errors that were not corrected on the slides. • PP are a matter of opinion and no matter what I use for delivery, 50% of the class is unhappy. • This semester I may reduce the amount of lecturing that I do with PP but in order to do this YOU have to read the material to be covered in the class. • This will provide more time for problem solving. • REMEMBER: I am NOT the textbook and I don’t replace it.
How to get an A. • Weekend • Read next weeks material. • Try to complete assignment before class time. • During Week • Work the long problems from WebAssign • Different problems will usually be worked in class. • Ask Questions • Come to office hours for help. • Fridays will usually be Quiz day. • Most exams will be on Fridays except for Good Friday. • Studying helps!! • $100,000 small bills will also work.
An offer: • Room MAP-306 vacant from 7:30 – 8:30 AM. If you want, I can use this hour (probably on Fridays) to answer questions, work problems, etc. • Think about it … we will decide later in the week • Your lab will include a recitation hour. • This is an extra “recitation” class. • In previous semesters, most students said that these sessions were helpful for problem solving. Last semester nobody was interested so no session was held. This is your choice.
An Issue • I create workshops for High & Middle School Science & Math Teachers on various topics in Science & Technology • www.floridahightech.com (See techPATH tab) • If I must miss a class I will either • Get a substitute, • Cancel the class if we are ahead of schedule, or • Use a 7:30 slot to replace the class I miss.
What’s Up????? • Clicker use starts immediately • We begin with chapter 23. • Charge, Coulomb’s Law and Electric Field • We are “scheduled” to cover approximately one chapter a week. • This is a VERY fast pace! • I usually can’t accomplish this. • All chapters depend on previous chapters • Don’t fall behind
Reminder • This is a hard class. • If you don’t get it, “it” will get you! • Start reading the first chapter.
Now go forth and be studiousSee you on Friday for first serious lecture.
