  8. RSS feeds for parliamentary acts http://www.senato.it/guida/126846/331508/genpaginarss.htm • Every act is already produced in pdfformat since 2000 • either by offices or by typography • Every type of parliamentary act has an associated feed, e.g. • Bills RSS • Agendas RSS • “All” RSS • Links to pdf files produced during the last week • Enable reducing/stopping hard copies • Savings: ~150K€/Year • paper subscriptions canceled

  9. Distribution of work documents Committee X Committee Office • Committee Offices distribute several printed docs • making photocopies • distributing hardcopies of dossiers • printing docs that they draft • They’re starting to use a collaboration tool with web file sharing interface • Well known tool, new use • Each Committee Off. owns its “area” • Content organization is “private” • Access is authenticated • Senators access the documents securely from tablets/netbooks/PCs • WiFi in Committees Bill 1 Bill 2 • Authenticated access from • https://collaborazione.senato.it

  10. Tablet devices are good dematerialization companions Reading experience of tablets is maximized by epub open file format and readers: Store ebooks in a “book library” Turn pages Insert bookmarks Insert comments/notes Adjust char size/contrast PDF and HTML formats have different targets: PDF is wysiwyg HTML is volatile How to exploit epub? Tablets, Epub

  11. www.senato.it/ebook • An Open Source Engine to generate e-books of parliamentary documentation in ePub format starting from HTML, XHTML, XML, PDF documents

  12. ebook download Download standard predefined e-books: Last press review All agendas (Assembly and Committees) All last issued acts … Selectdocumentsof interest and create anebook “on demand” Bills Reports Agendas Non-legislativedocs …

  13. engine is open source http://scribaebookmake.sourceforge.net/ • Scriba conversion engine makes extensive use of open source software • We officially released the ScribaEpub conversion engine under GNU GPL3 license on sourceforge • Scriba is freely downloadable from source forge • It is a JEE web service that can be deployed on Tomcat OS AS • We will be glad of supporting parliamentary developers willing to integrate Scriba conversion engine in their infrastructures.

  14. Tabletoptimizedwebsite http://tablet.senato.it • Migrating webTV site, we faced issues on layouts and streaming formats • This drove us to build a light experimental version of a simple website optimized for tablet devices • based on HTML5 and CSS3 to maximize rendering on tablets • It is a cheap and OS/device independent alternative to “Apps” • Less costly to evolve and to maintain • Has limitations • We are evaluating the use of tablet website and apps for consolidating the efforts on dematerialization and offering new “tablet oriented” services
