What is an EESU? • A more efficient, powerful battery • Converts stored Chemical Energy into Electrical Energy • Makes use of portable electricity available for greater number of applications
How Does an EESU Work? • Simple battery is composed of a number of voltaic cells • Each voltaic cell is a combination of two half-cells • Cathode/Anode • Connected by an electrolyte
How Does an EESU Work? • Because of different charges between electrodes, there is a difference in EMF • Voltage is the measurement of this force
Basic Battery Types • Primary (Non-Rechargeable) • Secondary (Rechargeable)
Development of EESUs • First evidence of batteries dates back to 190 BC in Baghdad. • Iron rod surrounded by copper, encased in a pot. • Produced 1.5-2 volts
Development of EESUs • Alessandro Volta, 1800 published specifications for his “pile” batteries. • Stacked Silver, Zinc, and salt.
Development of EESUs • 1949 modern Alkaline battery created by Lew Urry, Eveready. • Lithium Ion battery introduced by Sony in 1991.

Modern Advances of the EESU • EEStor’s ultra-capacitors combine Barium Titanate, Aluminum Oxide, and glass. • Previous super-capacitors were impractical, only about .02MJ/kg. • EEStor ultra-capacitors expected up to 2.5MJ/kg.
