A Word To Husbands Christian Husband Responsibilities Ephesians 5:23-33
Husband Responsibilities: Love • Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, (Ephesians 5:25,26, ESV) • In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. (Ephesians 5:28-30, ESV) Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. (1 Cor. 13:4-8a)
John Chrysostom (347-407 A.D.)Commentary on Eph 5:22-28 “Show her that you value her company, and prefer being at home to being out. Esteem her in the presence of your friends and children. Praise and show admiration for her good acts; and if she ever does anything foolish, advise her patiently.” “Never call her by her name alone, but with terms of endearment, honor, and love. If you honor her, she won’t need honor from others; she won’t desire praise from others if she enjoys the praise that comes from you. Prefer her before all others, both for her beauty and her discernment, above all praise her.”
Christ’ love for his bride: the church • even as the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:28 RSV) • But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8 RSV) Selfless Sacrificial Unconditional Love Nourish Cherish
Husband responsibilities: love • Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Ephesians 5:33 NKJV)
Husband Responsibilities: Lead • To the woman he said, "I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.“ (Genesis 3:16, ESV) • But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. (1 Corinthians 11:3, ESV) • For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. (Ephesians 5:25, ESV)

Husband Responsibilities: Learn • Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. (1 Peter 3:7, ESV) • Ye husbands, in like manner, dwell with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor unto the woman, as unto the weaker vessel, as being also joint-heirs of the grace of life; to the end that your prayers be not hindered. (1 Peter 3:7 ASV) “Many marriages would be better if the husband and the wife clearly understood that they are on the same side.” (ZigZiglar)
Husband Responsibilities: Learn • The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not rule over her own body, but the husband does; likewise the husband does not rule over his own body, but the wife does. Do not refuse one another except perhaps by agreement for a season, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, lest Satan tempt you through lack of self-control. (1 Corinthians 7:3-5 RSV)
