Festivals: Spaces of Exception. A grounded theory approach to understanding space and applying critical theory to look at voice, agency and community. It is an interdisciplinary investigation looking at youth created space and the ways in which young people engage in informal forms of participation in festival space. KEY QUES; • 1. How does festival space produce positive, creative spaces that engage young people? • 2. Are alternative forms of participation occurring in festival space? • 3. Do these new forms of participation have the potential to be translated into wider structural frameworks for the benefit of increasing young people's agency? Aims; • To broaden concepts of participation and participatory activity. • To create a framework for participation with young people based on new forms of participation identified in festival space. This work seeks to broaden concepts of participation and critique the way in which young people are represented in U.K society.
