Tips for a Successful Application Clarity: application is well written, well organized and error free Originality: application is challenging, interesting, ambitious yet feasible Importance of research is clear Impact research will make is stated – more than scholarly impact – community engagement, potential policy outcomes Presented confidently not boastfully Link dissemination plans to research agenda – conferences in first year? Link student training to research needs
Tips for a Successful Application • Prepare your proposal with the Assessors (experts ) and Committee members (possibly generalists) in mind • Summary of Proposed Research is VERY important – spend time on this! • Take previous committee comments into account • Established scholars - avoid submitting a “Trust Me” application – a strong record will not compensate for a weak program, also give evidence of consistent scholarly activity • Have your grant proposal read by colleagues who have been successful in previous SSHRC competitions (College of Reviewers)
Presenting your Curriculum Vitae • Follow the instructions re: format and page limitations • Categorize your publications: refereed, non-refereed, etc. • Avoid “inflating” the CV • Indicate productivity from previous grants • Be honest and specific about forthcoming items
Evaluation of your Record of Achievement • Contributions from last 6 years unless career was interrupted • Quality and significance of published work • Originality and impact of previous research • Quantity of research activity • Importance of other scholarly activities • Recentness of output and consistency of output • Dissemination to non-academic audiences where relevant • Productivity from previous grant (s) • Training of future researchers
How to Prepare a Budget • Present a modest, reasonable budget (think “minimum essential funding”) • Check Tri-Council list of eligible and ineligible expense • Explain and justify costs • Link between research objectives and budget • Avoid, whenever possible, budgeting for professional services • Insight Grant is 2-5 years and Insight Development Grant is 1-3 years. Think over time line carefully when preparing your budget
Health Related Research SSHRC vs. CIHR • Eligible SSHRC Subjects • comparative studies in which health is not the primary object of study (e.g., health care workers as a group in a comparative study on the use of the Internet for distance education); • historical and/or archaeological research where there is no intent to influence health (e.g., biographies of health practitioners or health scientists; health and hygiene in ancient civilizations); • economic or management analysis unrelated to improved health or health care (e.g., the impact of the health-care industry on national or local economies; the impact of epidemics on the profitability of insurance companies); • cinematic or other artistic portrayals of illness in which health promotion is not a central aim; or • religious and/or cultural research related to dietary or other practices (e.g., fasting, vegetarianism), in which health is not the central focus of research.
Health Related Research SSHRC vs. CIHR • Ineligible SSHRC Subjects • socio-economic and cultural determinants of health, including theoretical and empirical research on the social construction of health, sickness and health behaviour; • health promotion (e.g., healthy eating, disease prevention and education) and health behaviour (e.g., addictions, physical fitness, movement and exercise studies, cultural and social variables that affect health behaviour); • clinical research (e.g., treatment, prevention or diagnosis of a condition or disease; testing the impact of medication or medical aids); • therapy (e.g., counselling, psychotherapy, rehabilitation and occupational therapy, validation/testing of diagnostic tools), including the use of performing/visual arts as an element of therapy;
Health Related Research SSHRC vs. CIHR • Ineligible SSHRC Subjects Cont’d • health policy, management and law (e.g., care practices and service provision, practical/clinical training of health professionals, access to and quality of care, cost management in health care, liability of practitioners, health insurance, health record systems, evaluation of health programs and/or services); • humanities perspectives on health, including health ethics; or • knowledge translation research related to health (e.g., research that informs health policy, treatment and/or services)
What’s Next? • College of Reviewers – Who are they and how will they help? • Connect with a member from the College of Reviewers via the Research Office • Dates to Aim for – Insight Grant – October 2011 • Close to Final Draft submission to reviewer – September 1 • Final Draft submission to Research Office – October 1 • Final Submission date to SSHRC – via Research Office – October 15
