History of My family • My pap met my nan when he was over in Seoul South Korea during the war. • They were married less than a year of being together. • They lived there for 4 years. • In that time they had 2 children. • When they arrived back in the states they had 3 more children.
Rice, Rice, and More Rice • While my grandparents lived in South Korea rice was a vital part of life. • Rice was eaten, used as a type of adhesive, and even used as walls and windows. • My nan worked in a rice field from the time she was 8 with her mom. • Everyday when my pap walked to base he had to walk through 2 different rice fields.
Moving to Pennsylvania • In 1970 my nan and pap decided to move back to the United States. • They settled down in my pap’s hometown of Lykens, PA. • Upon arriving in the states my Nan became a United States Citizen. • Despite moving to a different country my Nan still kept many traditions.
Traditions • My nan did not work. • She stayed home and took care of the kids. • When my pap would get home from work she would wait on him hand and foot. • She would then do all the cleaning and take care of the house • She did not cook American food for many years. • She cooked many traditional Korean dishes • Rice • Vegetables, Kimchi YUM!! • Noodles • Fish • Meats • Beans
Growing up in Her house • I grew up learning to eat food in her house with chopstick because she did not have silverware. • I ate foods most people would find bizarre like squid, octopus, Kimchi, and beansprout.
Today • Today my nan is like any other little old 70 year old lady. • She loves going to the casino and spending all of my pap’s money. • Every time I ever step in her house the first thing she has to do is cook my my favorite dish of rice, seaweed, and kimchi.
