  4. What is Islam? World Religions: The word “Islam” means “submission to God”. The word “muslim” means “one who submits to God”. Islam = religion Muslim = follower Islam

  5. Where is Islam? World Religions: Islam has spread across the whole world, but the largest populations of Muslims are found in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, in an area known as the 10/40 Window. Islam

  7. Origin World Religions: Islam was founded in 610AD by a man named Mohammed. Mohammed was a merchant/trader who lived in a polytheistic area/culture. Islam

  8. Origin World Religions: At the age of 40, Mohammed received a vision from the angel Gabriel, who gave him the “shahada” – “There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is his messenger.” Islam

  9. Origin World Religions: Mohammed began preaching his message, but gained few followers early on, and was actually persecuted in his home area (Mecca). He and his followers fled to Medina. Islam

  10. Origin World Religions: In Medina, Mohammed united conflicting tribes, and later returned to Mecca with 10,000 followers and conquered it. By the time of his death in 632AD, most of Arabia had converted to Islam. Islam

  14. Beliefs World Religions: • Belief in Allah • Belief in the angels (good and bad) • Belief in the “books of god” • Belief in the prophets (Mohammed, Adam, Abraham, Moses, etc.) Islam

  15. Beliefs World Religions: • 5. Belief in the “last/judgment day” • 6. Belief in the divine measurement of human affairs (Allah’s justice) • 7. Belief in life after death. Islam

  16. Beliefs World Religions: • Muslims also believe in Satan, heaven, • and hell. They also believe that Ishmael • (the father of the Arab world), not Isaac • (the father of the Jewish world) received • the promise of God’s covenant. Islam
