At least one researcher traces the origins of the MSDS to hieroglyphics on the inside of the pyramids which gave users of various chemicals information about how to use them safely, etc.
From a U.S. regulatory standpoint, the first requirements were adopted in the late 1960's in the maritime industry. In 1983, they were required by OSHA in the manufacturing industry--this was later expanded to cover all employers in 1987.

Moraine Park will take reasonable precautions to: • provide campus environments that are free from recognized chemical hazards • ensure that chemical hazards are identified within each area • make available MSDS information to all who may potentially be exposed
Make sure that staff, students and vendors are informed of: • the content of and how to access the program • the hazardous properties of chemicals with which they work • safe handling procedures and protective measures

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) What information does an MSDS contain? • OSHA specifies the information to be included • Does not prescribe the precise format for an MSDS • The MSDS must be in English and must include at least the following information: Sample – Appendix B
Chemical & Company Identity • Hazardous Ingredients • Physical Data • Fire and Explosion Hazard Data • Health Hazard Data • Reactivity (Instability) Data • Spill or Leak Procedures • Special Protection Information • Special Precautions
Chemical & Company • Identity • Chemical & Common Name • Manufacturer Information • Emergency Phone Number
Hazardous Ingredients • All components of a mixture • Chemical and common names of all ingredients determined to be health hazards
Physical Data • Physical and chemical characteristics including: • boiling and freezing points • density, vapor pressure • specific gravity • solubility, volatility • product's general appearance and odor
Fire and Explosion Hazard Data • The compound's potential for fire and explosion must be described • Fire hazards of the chemical and the conditions under which it could ignite or explode • Recommended extinguishing agents and fire-fighting methods
Health Hazard Data • Health hazards of the chemical, signs and symptoms of exposure • Medical conditions that are aggravated by exposure • Chemical health hazards and effects on target organs • Route of entry into the body (inhalation, skin, and ingestion)
Reactivity (Instability) Data • This section presents information about other chemicals and substances with which it reacts.
Spill or Leak Procedures • Hygiene practices • Precautions during repair and maintenance of equipment • Procedures for cleaning up spills and leaks
Special Protection Information • & Special Precautions • Engineering controls, safe handling procedures, and personal protective equipment • Information is often included on the use of goggles, gloves, body suits, respirators, and face shields
Program Plan Responsibilities
Requestor/Purchaser ·If ordering on PeopleSoft, identify first-time purchases of hazardous materials on a separate line. Create a line comment stating the following: “AN MSDS SHEET MUST ACCOMPANY THE ORDER FOR THIS PRODUCT UPON SHIPMENT. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THIS REQUEST WILL RESULT IN REFUSAL OF SHIPMENT.” If procuring by credit card or online, obtain an MSDS sheet for each first-time product purchased. Identify the room # on the MSDS sheet and forward the original to Human Resources for input into the database.
All Staff • ·Acquaint themselves with the proper use and handling of hazardous substances required in their positions and attend required training. • ·If applicable, inform students of hazardous materials in their classroom environments and MPTC’s Chemical Hazard Communication Program. • ·If applicable, inform vendors of hazardous materials and MPTC’s Chemical Hazard Communication Program. • · If applicable, maintain hard copies of MSDS sheets. • ·Complete an annual inventory of hazardous materials.
Management Staff • ·Ensure that responsible staff members comply with program responsibilities. • ·Ensure that new employees are trained at the time of their initial assignment to work with a hazardous chemical and that employees are notified when a new hazard is introduced into the workplace. • ·Ensure that employees are following appropriate protective measures when handling hazardous chemicals.
