For samples that will be stored for more than a day or for samples with a high pH: Adjust the pH to less than 2 with Hydrochloric acid or Sulfuric Acid (typically 3-5 drops depending on buffers in sample)
10 parts sample to 1 part solvent • Add Solvent For example: For 150 ml of sample add 15 ml of solvent

Open the cap on the bottle during the 2 minute shaking to relieve the pressure
Hexane is lighter than water and will float on the top of the sample
Using a syringe or pipette, take 50 microliters of solvent extract
Silica Gel Extraction The difference between TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon) and TOG (Total Oil and Grease) is the polar organics are removed from the extract using silica gel. The remaining hydrocarbons are the non-polar components considered to be TPH
