Vertical Pinger Status Dan Bollinger Many thanks to Ryoichi Miyamato & Roger Tokarek
Past pinger study problems • Studies on 1/25/08: • Could not get reliable TBT data. • Could not hit the beam consistently. • Studies on 2/22/08: • Inconsistent triggering, no TBT data. • Discovered that the pinger was not being triggered. • Found that the thyratron was most likely candidate.
Thyratron change out on 2/25/08 Discovered that we were being fooled during previous studies by the shorting relay closing, which sets up the same ½ sine wave as the thyratron does. So, the last time the pinger may have worked was at the beginning of the 1/25 studies.
Things that contribute to pinger delays Delays from triggering account for up to ~ 24 Trev. However, the number of Trev’s should get smaller at higher voltages which is not what we find. What we actually find is that the number of Trev’s increases with higher voltages. So, the overriding effect is the time required to charge the big capacitor, which is ~RC time constant of the system: ec = Eapplied[1-e-t/RC]
