TEACHER EDUCATIONGENERAL INFORMATION • Teacher Education programs are not available for GRAD Trac. • Bilingual Education • 4 ½-5 year program. • Some summer work may be needed. • Study abroad required during junior year. • Additional Spanish courses may be needed for Track A. • Must become proficient in oral and written Spanish for Track A. • Early Childhood Program • 4 year program requires summer work or 18 s.h. each semester. • Sequential program. • Elementary Education • 4 year program may require summer work or 18 s.h. semesters. • Sequential program.

Teacher Education General Information Continued…. • Special Education Program (K-12) • 4 year program, sequential program. • Dual Licensure Program • Student’s major in Special Education, receive licensure for both Special Education and Elementary Education. • Take additional Elementary Education required courses. • 4 1/2 year program; some summer work may be needed. • Physical Education (K-12) • 4 year program, sequential program • Middle School (5-8) • Language arts, social science, math or science • 4 year program, sequential program.

4. What to Expect • As an Education major you will have 15-17 hours per semester (5-6 classes) • For every 1 semester hour of a course a student should expect to study a minimum of 2 hours outside of class. • Example: 3 credit hour class = 6 hour minimum study time per week Attendance is important! Books are important!

5. Explanation of General Education • I. Communication (9 s.h.) • II. Natural Sciences/Mathematics (10-16 s.h.) • III. Social Sciences (9 s.h.) • IV. Humanities & Fine Arts (9 s.h.) • V. Multicultural Studies (3 s.h.) • VI. Human Well Being (3 s.h.) • One general education course will be an FYE (you take one in the fall along with UNIV 100) • Similar to what you had to do to graduate from high school. • General education curriculum requires that you take certain classes in specific areas.

6. FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE (FYE) & UNIV 100 • The First Year Experience (FYE) is a comprehensive approach to ensure first year students make a successful transition to college. • All freshmen are required to enroll in one FYE course fall semester along with UNIV 100. • When viewing Course Search on the STARS system, FYE courses will be designated with a “Y” indicator (can only take ONE). • You will work with your advisor to select an appropriate FYE course.

7. GPA Requirement • 2.75 cumulative and major GPA for entrance to Teacher Education Program (end of 3rd semester) and junior/senior level departmental courses. (PE requires minimum 2.50 GPA) • The Illinois State Board of Education requires all candidates seeking teacher licensure to obtain a grade of “C” or better in all directed general education courses, all core courses and all courses in the option. Note: C- is below a C.

8. Teacher Education Program (TEP) • Must meet all requirements by end of sophomore year: • TEP application • Reflective Paper • Minimum grade of “C” in ENG 180 and required general education MATH course. • 2.75 (2.50 for PE) cumulative & major GPA. • ICTS Test of Academic Proficiency: $113 (computer-based test) or ACT Plus Writing ($58.50) or SAT ($57) • Technology Competency Assessment: $30 • English Language Learner modules: $20

9. ILTS LICENSURE TESTS • ACT Plus Writing. $58.50 • http://www.actstudent.org/ • Must have a comprehensive score of 22 and a 6 on the subarea (if taken after 9/10/16) • SAT. $57 • http://sat.collegeboard.org/home • Must have a composite score of 1110 on the evidence-based reading and writing + mathematics and a 26 on the writing and language • Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP). $113 fee • Must pass all four areas (Math, Reading Comprehension, Language Arts and Writing) • http://www.il.nesinc.com/ • Preparation materials http://www.wiu.edu/coehs/cpep/certification/test_taking_preparation.php Required for entrance into TEP (sophomore year).

10. ILTS LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS • Content Tests. • Required for student teaching clearance. • SPED & BIED majors have 2 content tests. • Dual Licensure requires 3 content tests Computer based test fees at a Pearson Vue testing Center: $99-$153 • edTPA-Cost $300 • edTPA is a performance based assessment with versions in 27 different teaching fields covering Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle Childhood and Secondary.

11. PRE-STUDENT TEACHING FIELD EXPERIENCES • Students will complete a variety of field experiences prior to student teaching semester • Observations • Tutoring/aiding in the classroom • “Block” pre-student teaching • All placement arrangements are made by university officials • Students will be responsible for their own transportation (within 50-60 miles of campus) • Fingerprint Criminal Background check: $60-$61.75 • Completed for all field experiences

12. STUDENT TEACHING • Apply for student teaching one year prior. • Students select a student teaching region, placement is made by WIU officials. • Student Teaching Regions. • Chicago suburbs (most require an interview). • Chicago city. • Quad Cities. • Western Central Illinois. • Requirements. • Must meet all requirements to be cleared to student teach.

13. E-MAIL ACCOUNTS • It is important to activate (www.wiu.edu/guava) and check your WIU email regularly. • Financial Aid information, mid-term and semester grades, registration information, billing statements are all sent to your email. Faculty and Advisors will also contact you through this email address. • Keep your WIU e-mail account separate from your personal email.

14. STARS Student/Alumni Records System Account • Allows you to register online. • Check your grades. • Billing information. • Financial Aid information. • Student Degree Plans. • WARD (Western’s Audit of Graduation Requirements for Degree). • Request transcripts and much more!

15. Student Degree Plan • All students along with their advisors will create a Student Degree Plan. This plan will include general education and major requirements. • This plan along with the WARD (Western’s Audit of Requirements for Degrees) Report is used in advising sessions to ensure that students complete all courses required for graduation. • Both the Student Degree Plan and WARD are available on STARS.

16. Advisor/Advisee Relationship • The advisor can be the first contact to go to for information and help. • Registration Assistance. • Degree Plan questions. • Policy questions. • Grade appeals. • One mandatory meeting minimum each semester prior to registration.

17. Advisor/Family Member Relationship • Initial resource and referral. • General concepts, procedures and policies. • Due to FERPA (Federal Education Right to Privacy Act) advisors cannot release information to family members without the consent of the student and appropriate documentation on file with the university. • Parent Guest Access • Students may grant online access to their records to multiple guests (maximum of 5) by selecting Parent and Guest Account Management from the STARS menu. Students may provide different levels of access to their STARS account information for each guest. When a student creates a guest account, the guest is assigned a WIU ID Number and password. The student is responsible for communicating this information to the guest. The guest will use these two items to login to Parent and Guest Access.

18. HOMEWORK • Before registration tomorrow use the Registration worksheet along with your major advisement sheet to pick out classes. • Use course search on STARS to start looking at possible days/times of classes. • Write information on Trial class schedule sheet (including STARS numbers, days and times) • Should have 15-17 hours this fall THE MORE YOU DO TONIGHT THE LESS TIME IT WILL TAKE TOMORROW!
