Why and How did the Civil War Begin? • Slavery continued to be banned in many states • Missouri Compromise - 1820 • Missouri – Slave State • Maine – Free State • Compromise of 1850 • California – Free State • Fugitive Slave Act • Every time there was a debate for creating a new state, the debate over whether slavery would be allowed raged on.
What resulted from the Civil War? • The 11 Confederate States were defeated • Slavery was ended in America • 600,000 Americans died • 350,000 – Union • 250,000 - Confederate • The Emancipation Proclamation • The passage of the 13th Amendment • A bunch more stuff we're going to learn about through this unit!

What is the Emancipation Proclamation? • January 1st, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. • Only applied to the states in rebellion • Changed the focus of the war from preserving the Union to the Freedom of Slaves • African-Americans could now serve in the military • Led to the complete abolition of slavery
What is the 13th Amendment? • Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. • Passed first by the Senate. • Passed 119-56 in the House
