What is an empirical article? • Report that describes a study that the authors actually conducted • Primary source • Experiment, correlation, meta-analysis • Has 6 major sections
Sections of an Empirical Article • Abstract • Overview of the study (includes information) • Used to screen for relevant papers • Introduction • Background of an issue • Why the study is important
Sections of an Empirical Article • Methods • How was the study conducted (the who and the what) • Results • Reports statistics- What happened (not why) • Discussion • Interpretation of the results
Sections of an Empirical Article • References • Works cited • Tables • Figures • Graphs of results • Appendices • List of stimuli or surveys used
Empirical vs. Literature Review Empirical Literature Review General overview of what is known on a topic Authors are reporting on others’ studies Secondary source Does not have major sections we discussed • Describe an experiment that the authors actually conducted • Primary source • Have major sections we just discussed
Where are empirical articles? Academic databases online, or at the library • PsychInfo/Ebsco Host • Available through WPU’s library’s website • Google Scholar • Wider selection of articles, but fewer full text documents. • Visit the Library! • The library is a wonderful place
How do find databases • Go to peace.edu • Under quick links in “Menu” sidebar, click on “Library login”
How to find databases • Once on the library’s page, scroll down • Under “Most popular databases”, click on “PsycINFO”
Searching for Articles • Keywords • Words or phrases that will generate articles on a specific topic • Example: • Alcohol • Addiction • Alcohol abuse • Alcoholism • Binge drinking
Searching for Articles You will use the following techniques to find your empirical articles: • Boolean operators • And • Or • Not • Truncation • * • Quotations • “ ”
Searching for Articles - AND • Boolean Operator – AND • Both words should be present • Alcohol AND Addiction • Retrieves documents that contain both concepts ‘Alcohol’ and ‘Addiction’
Searching for Articles - OR • Boolean Operator - OR • Either word should be present • Alcohol OR Addiction • Retrieves documents that contain either concept ‘Alcohol’ or ‘Addiction’
Searching for Articles - NOT • Boolean Operator – NOT • The word should not be present • Alcohol NOT Addiction • Retrieves documents that contain information relating to ‘Alcohol’ but not ‘Addiction’
Searching for Articles - Truncation • Creates search for all variants of a word stem • Example: Comput* • Computing, computer, compute, etc.
Searching for Articles - Quotations • Searches for an exact phrase by using quotation marks • Example: I want to look up articles on alcohol abuse • Option 1: Alcohol abuse • Option 2: “Alcohol abuse”
Summary • Only include information essential to understanding the study • Summary of entire experiment • Summarize each major section with a sentence or two • Approximately 200-300 words • Important to be concise! • Good skill to have generally
