    2. Phosphate is….. There are two different types of phosphate: Organic- a part of living plants and animals, their by-products and remains. Inorganic- includes ions bonded to soil particles, and phosphate that is present in laundry detergent. A very essential element for life.

    3. Cont. Excess phosphate causes extensive algal growth, called “blooms”. Algal Blooms are a classic symptom of cultural eutrophication.

    5. Cont. Sewage from wastewater treatment plants is one main source of phosphorous in rivers. The water treatment plants will often fail to meet the standards that are set. A lot of phosphorous finds it way through the runoff of feedlots and barnyards. Soil erosion contributes the phosphorous to rivers.

    6. Cont. Fertilizers also contain phosphorous. Draining swamps and marshes for farmland or other buildings releases nutrients such as phosphorous.

    8. Good or Bad? Bad, because when the phosphate builds up it eventually causes cultural eutrophication.

    9. Cultural Eutrophication First symptom is an algal bloom that colors the water a pea-soup green. As they increase aquatic plants that normally grow in shallow waters become very dense. Swimming, boating, etc. may become impossible.

    10. Cont. Advanced stages produce anaerobic conditions in which oxygen in the water is completely depleted. The water then gets a “rotten egg” smell.

    11. Ways to Eliminate Cultural Eutrophication Reducing use of lawn fertilizers. Encouraging better farming practices. Preserving natural vegetation whenever possible. Supporting measures to improve phosphorous removal. Requiring particular industries to pre-treat wastes.
