Lesson 4: The Marxist Critique of Bourgeois Capitalism Lesson Question: What is Marxism? What is Communism? Lesson Objectives: The students will understand a few of the basic tenets of Marxist theory, especially its critique of bourgeois capitalism. The students will understand the Marxist five-stage theory of history.
Marx’s 5 Stages of History: 1. Primitive Communism • Hunters and gatherers • All resources used in common • Domesticated agriculture and private property 2. Slave Society • Land produces wealth • Slaves work land for aristocracy • Need for slaves causes warfare which exhausts societies 3. Feudalism • Kings and lords control land • Peasantry reduced to serfdom • Trade and rise of bourgeoisie 4. Bourgeois Capitalism • Profit motive rules society • State dominated by bourgeoisie and laws protect their interests • Imperialism necessary for raw materials and markets • Continual oppression of the proletariat results in revolution 5. Communism • Proletariat overthrows bourgeois state and controls means of production • Proletariat allocates resources of society according to people’s needs • Eventually the state disappears and democratic councils of workers run society • Historical development ends
