Better Quality Food But… • Singaporeans are eating healthier than in 2004 but… • 6 in 10 Singaporeans are consuming too much calories • Intake of healthy products (e.g. wholegrain* foods) and unsaturated** oils has increased. DICTIONARY *Wholegrain: made with or containing whole unprocessed grains of something **Unsaturated: fatty acid which has double or more bond in its molecules, can dissolve more easily.
OVER-EATING • On average, people overeat by 200 calories every day • Extra calories could lead to a weight gain of per year 5kg
EXCESSIVE SUGAR AND FATS • The biggest pitfalls* are sugar and fat. • 13 per cent more people consume sugary drinks than in 2004 • One third of youths have an average of one soft drink every day when the guideline is two a week! • Seven in 10 people eat too much saturated ** fat • Saturated fat is present in coconut milk, biscuits, cakes, red meat and certain types of fried food. DICTIONARY *Pitfalls: a hidden or unsuspected danger or difficulty **Saturated: a type of fat that increases cholesterol
NEW MOBILE APP • To make sure that people don’t overeat, the Health Promotion Board (HPB) will launch a free mobile app this year • It will give shoppers nutritional facts at a glance • Scan the barcode printed on the product • Information about calories and daily guidelines will be displayed on the phone or iPad. Here’s how it works!
New labelLingsystem • The HPB will make it compulsory for all Healthier Choice products to put their labels in front of the product packaging. • The labels will display the nutritional information in one standard serving of the product.
Healthy Eating • Read the labels on everything you eat and know what they mean. • Avoid trans fat, which is a type of saturated fat. Look out for the word ‘Hydrogenated’ in the ingredient list. Avoid such items! • Use the ‘Food Pyramid’ to guide you on how many servings for each type of food to take. • Limit your fats, sugar, oil and salt intake • Choose wholegrain food and eat fruits and vegetables.
Healthy eating (2) 6. Have everything in moderation. Don’t over-consume any one type of food. Vary your diet. 7. Eat your food slowly. It takes some time for your stomach to tell the brain it is full so that you don’t overeat. 8. Drink plenty of water. Some people confuse thirst for hunger. If you are still hungry 15 minutes after a glass of water, then it’s time for a snack.Drink about 2-3 litres of water daily. 15 minutes
