Is HMB the key? H M B Tony Chao
Background info • Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) • Discovered by Dr. Steven L Nissen, dept of animal science, Iowa St Univ • Produced from Leucine and a-ketoisocaproate (KIC) via KIC-dioxygenase • Synthesized in the body • Food sources: alfalfa sprouts, grapefruit, catfish, asparagus, avocado • Sold as supplement to increase muscle gains and fat loss
Rowlands & Thompson, 2009 What are the claims? • Act as anti-catabolic agent • Attenuate proteolysis via down regulation of proteolytic pathways • Mechanism unclear • Increase lean muscle mass increase maximal strength • HMB HMG-CoA, provide carbon source for cholesterol synthesis muscle hypertrophy • Improve body composition • Increase fatty-acid oxidation • Mechanism unknown
Gallagher et al., 2000 Training adaptation may attenuate exercise induced muscle damage (Rowlands & Thompson, 2009)
Results • Increase strength • Trained – trivial • Untrained – small effect (lower body) • Increase muscle mass • Trivial • Increase fat loss • Trivial • Improved body composition • Trivial
Conclusion • May initially be beneficial to untrained men starting a strength training program • May be of little worth to highly trained men • Up to ½ HMB excreted in urine (Nissen & Abumrad, 1997)
