What is Running Start? • High School in the College vs. College in the High School • Earn College Credits • Classes at EWU, SFCC, or SCC • CCS can earn AA Degree • College level courses WITH college level GRADES • You essentially have ALL the expectations and responsibilities of a College Student. • Running Start vs. AP
Profile of Successful RS Student • Independent • Mature & responsible • Able to assimilate with unique populations at CCS or EWU • Self-motivated • Follows through on commitments • Keeps in contact with LHS community
RS Student’s Responsibility • Meet quarterly with College RS Advisor • Meet quarterly with HS Counselor to review your graduation status • You are responsible for REGISTERING & PASSING the required college equivalent classes for which you sign up. • Culminating Project • WOIS – High School & Beyond Plan • HSPE • Senior Activities Calendar, deadlines, college applications, etc. (www.lctigers.com)
High School Counselor Responsibility • Course Recommendation Form & Course Equivalency Guide • Counselor will advise course plan (you are responsible for signing up for the correct classes)
EWU Requirements • Junior or Senior • On track to graduate • Completed Math through 3A-B (or take at high school). • 3.25 GPA (Cumulative) • Pay for all books and Lab Fees – books $40-125, labs $5 – 40 • Provide own transportation – public transportation available
SFCC/SCC Requirements • Junior or Senior • On Track to Graduate • Completed Math through 3A-B (or take at high school) • Achieve college level scores on ASSET or COMPASS Test ($20) • Pay for all books and Lab Fees – books $40-125, labs $5 – 40 • Provide own transportation – public transportation available
Application Process • Complete the appropriate RS college application – SFCC, SCC & EWU are ALL different • MUST turn in completed application to Mrs. Mitzlaff – Counseling Center • EWU requires LHS Counselor Signature • Colleges will send a letter outlining your next steps • Your responsibility to complete those steps on time
Advantages • Potential for earning college credits free – Transferable to WA schools • Independent study and preparation for college and life • Opportunity to take classes not offered at High School • Non-Traditional Alternative • AA Degree at the Community Colleges
Limitations • Grades are part of your permanent college transcript • Less opportunities for socialization • Disconnection from High School • Semester vs. Quarter system – overlaps, breaks • Scheduling difficulties – conflict between HS & college class offerings, extracurricular activities, PT vs. FT • Required college classes are not offered every quarter – PLANNING REQUIRED!
