DOS-the beginning • Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS) • Originally a project with IBM • Based on the Quick and Dirty Operating System (QDOS) written by Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products • Which was based on the Control Program for Microcomputers (CP/M) written by Gary Kildall of Digital Research. • MS-DOS was written by Microsoft, and them Bill Gates convinced IBM to let MS retain the rights and Gates became a millionaire selling MS-DOS
Then Came the GUI • Xerox was actually the first company to make a GUI (that’s Graphical User Interface) • Steve Jobs went to Xerox and saw the Alto (the first GUI computer) • Then Jobs built the Lisa computer, the first consumer computer with a GUI. • This prompted Microsoft to produce the Windows OS. • The first version of which was not an OS on it’s own but rather an extension of MS-DOS.
The difference • Nowadays Windows is becoming more like Mac and Mac is becoming more like Windows, you see the circle, no? • The largest step in this direction is Windows 7, MS is making windows lighter (faster) and more user-friendly • The point is that the different OS’s are becoming more and more like each other
VS • Use any hardware • NFTS, not important to most but a major pain for people who use multiple OS’s • Must get software you want • EXE installs • Use Apple hardware • HFS, similar problem to NFTS • Has most utilities bundled, third party software is used less frequently • Bundle Installs Windows MacOS
By Caleb Jamison Windows VS Mac The debate will continue to rage till MS goes bankrupt (that means never)
