GuidingQuestion • In the College of Health and Human Development, the following majors require students to take a lower division chemistry (CHEM) course*: • Environmental and Occupational Health (CHEM 101 or CHEM 103) • Kinesiology - Exercise Science (CHEM 101 or CHEM 103) • Health Science - Public Health (CHEM 100 or CHEM 103) • In the Fall of 2018, the overall DFW rates for these chemistry courses were**: • 33% for CHEM 100 • 20% for CHEM 101 • 21% for CHEM 103 • For each major, is there a difference in DFW and repeat rates between the recommended CHEM courses? *For students to take CHEM 101, they must either have a satisfactory score on the Chemistry Placement Test or a grade of “C” or higher in CHEM 100. **Taken from CSUN’s Student Success Dashboard

Overview of Data CSUN Pathways data were analyzed • Data from Fall 2012-Fall 2018 were combined (summer classes were excluded) • Only HHD students who were enrolled in each of the three majors at the time they took the chemistry course(s) were included in the analyses. • Introductory chemistry courses recommended for each of the three majors were evaluated based on: • DFW rates • Repeat rates

  5. Concluding Thoughts • Recommendations • For all three programs, the DFW rates were lowest for CHEM 103. Therefore, unless students need CHEM 100/101 for graduate school, these programs may want to consider recommending students take CHEM 103 to improve student success. • Implications • Recommending more students take CHEM 103 instead of CHEM 100 or 101 could impact the Chemistry Department • In Spring 19, there are 11 CHEM 100 sections and there is only 1 CHEM 103 section
