Construction • Stands on site of Gallo-Roman temple to Jupiter, Christian basilica, Romanesque church • Construction began in 1163 during Louis VII’s reign • Completed around 1345 • Choir complete in 1182, nave in 1208, west front and towers 1225-1250
Destruction and Restoration • During reign of Louis XIV and XV, many tombs and stained glass destroyed in modernization movement • Many treasures destroyed and stolen during French revolution • Restoration program 1845-1868; construction of spire and sacristy • Restoration 1991-2001; maintenance and restoration
