Buddhism. History . Buddhism is a way of life, founded by Siddhartha Gautama, born around 560 B.C. At age 29 Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as Buddha, left his family and set out to seek an answer as to why there was so much suffering in the world.

History • Buddhism is a way of life, founded by Siddhartha Gautama, born around 560 B.C. • At age 29 Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as Buddha, left his family and set out to seek an answer as to why there was so much suffering in the world. • While meditating under a fig tree in a place called Bodh Gaya, he became aware of the answers he was seeking: the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path

  3. History Continued • In the 3rd century B.C.E Asoka adopted Buddhism as the state religion of India causing Buddha's teachings to become popular throughout India. • As Buddhism spread it took on different characteristics in different places.

  4. Beliefs • Buddhist follow the “Four Noble Truths” which are suffering, understanding the cause of suffering, ending suffering and the end of pain. • Additionally they follow the Eightfold Path: accept the 4 truths, right resolve, right speech, right behavior, right occupation, right effort, right contemplation and right meditation. • A person completing the Eightfold Path is said to have reached freedom from all suffering which Buddhists call nirvana.

  5. Beliefs • When a person dies, he or she returns in another form to continue to attempt to reach nirvana. • This cycle of death and rebirth is called the dharma. • Karma: Does not preordained fate, it refers to good or bad actions a person takes during their lifetime.

  6. Concept of God • Buddha is not thought of as a God. • The concept of god or gods is not important in Buddhism. • The main goal in Buddhism is to achieve nirvana.

  7. Sacred Writings • Pali Canon: Palm leaves that contain the teachings of Buddha.

  8. Symbols • The Buddha himself is the most commonly used. • Wheel of Life: depicts the circular nature of life, with its outer edge representing links in the cycle of life and rebirth.

  9. Worship/Sacred Space • Buddhist are expected to practice their beliefs in all aspects of their lives. • Meditation: The essential form of Buddhist devotion. Is a way of clearing the mind, to free it from all evil thoughts and distractions. • Temples and Monasteries can be found everywhere providing special places for meditation and devotion.
