~World Language Teacher Affirmation~ I am a World Language teacher and, as such, I am among the most colorful educators in the world. I am opinionated, volatile, emotional… and generally imbued with the capacity to find humor even in the most dire of circumstances. I am singularly patient with those around me who haven’t a clue as to the role of second language acquisition in the American curriculum. I am patient with the mythologies that propound the notion that functioning in more than one language is somehow outside the scope of the American mind. I am tenacious. The fact that mine is the only culture in the world where one can be monolingual and still be considered literate does not deter me from my mission of celebrating diversity. I am risk-taking. I have dared to acquire the language and assume the culture of at least one other linguistic group. I have traveled the world in search of understanding... allowed myself to be vulnerable... and learned to respect the value of intuition. I am, above all, optimistic... even in the face of absurdity. Like mythical Sisyphus, so often I push the rock up the hill only to have it roll back down on me. Even so, I adopt the stance offered up by Camus when he reminds me to “imagine Sisyphus happy."
