THE TRIP • Ljubljana – Burkina Faso – Ghana • Via: Italy, Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and finally Ghana. • 35 days to Burkina Faso • 7800 Kilometres • Total time: 6 months • Total kilometres: 11500 kms
THE VEHICLE • Series 3, Land Rover • 1982, 2.25 litre • Petrol • Tropical Sun roof • No power steering • No air conditioning • In fact, nothing at all!
Top 10 - useful equipment • Good quality water containers • Re-hydrating solution (salt minerals) • Good lighting system (vehicle+personal) • Fire extinguisher (at arms reach) • Good first aid kit + burn cream + sowing kit • Wet wipes • Good water purifying tabs (non-chlorine) • Twin gas cooker • Cigarettes/presents for bribes • Very good sunglasses
Top 9 – Non essential equipment • Winch – there are no trees in the desert • Too many clothes + shoes • Excessive camping equipment • Too much oil + lubricants • Batteries for torches • Mobile phone • Too many cosmetics and toiletries • Spare wheel rim • Gadgets running off 12 volts
Some useful tips • Be prepared for everything at anytime • Never trust an African for directions • Always trust your own judgement • Never show money before paying • Be street wise and smart – 24 hours a day • Have 360 degree vision at all time • Never drive at night - ever
Tips - additional • Always drink bottled, purified or boiled water, most diseases and infection are water carried • A sense of humour and a cigarette is the best option to diffuse a potentially dangerous situation • Never, ever argue with a policeman or other official, smile and pay the bribe • Show respect and understanding at all times – even if you disagree profoundly
No.1 Enemy - WEIGHT • In desert African expeditions, WEIGHT is your single worst enemy • Keep it light, simple and accessible. • Digging a 1.5 ton Land Rover out of soft sand in the Sahara desert in the midday sun is back braking, hard and potentially dangerous work
No. 2 Enemy – Lack of WATER • Water is your life – only when you don’t have access to it do you understand the value and importance of it. • Plan your water requirements very carefully • As a rule, in the desert you will drink 1 litre per hour in normal conditions – if digging cars out, this will double or treble. • Plan between 10-20 litres per person per day – that’s a great deal of water and is heavy.
