  1. What is AVID? • AVID stands for: Advancement Via Individual Determination • The purpose of AVID is to bring academic success to all students. • All 5th grade students at BFES will participate in the AVID program.

(continued) Key Components 1st Year Focus Areas Student Success Skills = speaking, listening, self-advocacy, study habits Organizational Tools = agenda, binder, time management, goals, note-taking (3 Formats) 2nd Year Focus Areas WICOR Lessons with emphasis on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading Partnerships = articulation. • AVID Elementary Program Overview At a Glance is part of a district-wide effort to create college-ready students • It is a foundational program for elementary sites (grades 4-6), that feed into certified AVID Elective programs at both the middle and high school levels • AVID is an embedded sequential academic skills program intended for non-elective, multi-subject, self-contained classrooms across the entire grade levels • There is an Elementary District Liaison who will oversee elementary sites and data collection • Site administrator and site teacher leader per grade level trained at Summer Institute • All teachers in targeted grade level trained by AVID Center Elementary Training Days or Summer Institute

Why use AVID? • Students’ success in class depends on their ability to implement specific skills that enable them to be prepared and organized. • These skills are habits, behaviors, and strategies that they can learn. • By utilizing these skills daily, students become proactive learners who take responsibility for their learning.

  4. AVID in a nutshell • AVID is an in-school academic support program for grades 4-12 that prepares students for college eligibility and success. • Each student keeps a binder with dividers for different subjects, a pencil case and takes notes daily. • The students primarily use their notes as study guides to help them with their homework, or to remember key concepts from the texts they are studying. • Notebooks will be checked and graded based on a rubric that students will be given.

  5. College Bound! If students implement these organizational strategies they will: • Be prepared and able to handle more rigorous curriculum as they advance • Be organized in a way that optimizes learning and understanding • Have the tools to successfully graduate from college
